Dreams

Waking up requires
yawning, stretching
sunlight tears.

Falling asleep demands
calming, cooling
rubbing eyes.

In between,
there are only dreams.

Martindale Texas
moonlight river
grass
and gravel

Sacrifice
your old shoes
to the shoe tree
and remember
what it was like
to be young.

The Explorer

My sister is an explorer walking
a slow, steep incline.
In her ascent she begins to think:
Maybe I could go higher?

She continues to climb never
stopping never resting.
She keeps going and keeps thinking:
Just a little bit higher!

Now the top is in view.
Her goal has always been the trip.
But when she reaches the peak, she thinks:
Is this as high as it gets?

My Dad

My dad is a survivor,
smiling, squinting, red-cheeked
Czech. Believes in good
people, believes in me.
It’s been over ten years since
he beat cancer, over ten
years since he had no white blood cells.

My dad is a survivor,
smiling, squinting, red-cheeked
Czech.

Just like me.

My Brother

My brother understands himself:
Acknowledges, nods, and asks the right questions.
He sometimes calls me on his way out to eat:
Would I like to grab some tacos?

Collin

My friend Collin used to play the saxophone:
Breathe deep tobacco lungs,
and kick — no shoot –
his left foot in the air,
as if to say:

Take that!

My friend Maurice
owes 400 dollars.
I could lend it to him,
but I kind of need it.
